Bethesda talks about the ’self-authorship’ of Super Mario Galaxy

A portion of a Next-Gen interview with Bethesda’s Emil Pagliarulo…

NG: What do you think of games that don’t necessarily have that clear-cut narrative, like all these more casual games for Wii, where the storytelling comes from somebody telling all their friends about their own experience with a casual game. What do you think of that type of story-telling style?

EP: The technical design term for that is self-authorship. The player invents his own stories. So in a game like Super Mario Galaxy, you’ve got the wacky Mario story, but it’s all about the things that you do. … Yeah, [storytelling] is all about your

actions, and that’s fundamental, but [what’s plus urgent is] society realizing that videogames can be taken seriously as a story-telling medium. Clearly, players enjoy that, or we wouldn’t have such a strong reaction to games like BioShock or GTA IV.

I think that’s actually pretty true. In SMG you have goals, but you can work towards accomplishing those goals in your own way. I know that I wandered off the main path multiple times while playing. I took moment to just jump around, explore galaxies, and just take the game world in.
