Why Artificial Scarcity Could Boost Digital Game Downloads

If Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are looking to give download sales a shot in the arm, artificial scarcity may be the way to do it. You know how Disney takes their classic movies ‘out of the vault’ to sell on DVD for a month or two? That’s a bunch of BS fed to teh consumer, but most society don’t realize it. citizens start to get nervous that they are going to miss out on the movies, and next they will forever

be put back ‘in the vault’.

All three console makers could do that with their downloadable titles, and it would most likely have the same impact. Use a bunch of buzz words, and invent the consumer feel that whether they don’t buy ‘game x’ now, they could miss out on it forever.

It would definitely work…but it would be pretty damn slimy.
