Xbox 360 Premium: Red Ring of Death 10% of All Warranties
SquareTrade, an electronics warranty company, has released more info from a statement earlier that month that lists a failure percentage of 16.4 for Xbox 360s in a recent study.
The report tracked the failure rate for 1040 consoles with warranties purchased amidst April 1 and July 31 last year. Of 171 claims made, only one of the 27 Elite and eight of the 57 Core units were claimed on. The rest of the analysis group machines were 956 Premium consoles, and of those 102 suffered the dreaded “red ring of death.” That’s only 10% of all warranties claimed.
SquareTrade plus noted that the analysis consoles were unlikely to have been any of the new and improved models produced more recently.
Following the initial report, Microsoft told GamesIndustry.biz:
“The majority of Xbox 360 owners have had a great experience with their consoles.”
“We do not reveal internal hardware
repair info and we do not comment on speculation.”
As an owner of an original Xbox 360 myself, I’ve had no problems so far. When those rings go red, I use the Engineer’s Law: “Use a Bigger Hammer” until it goes green again. No Problem.
